...who we are
What’s in a Name?
We knew you’d ask! But before we divulge any valuable trade secrets, allow us first to share with you who we are. Great! Here goes. We’re a small, professional “boutique” bicycle repair shop in Syracuse owned and operated by life-long cyclist Andy Schmid and his wife Helene. We don't sell bikes, and we don’t have a large workforce to manage. That means our working hours are spent doing what’s important - repairing your bike so you can get it back fast, and fixed right. More big benefits to our small size? Your bike is evaluated in a relaxed, one-on-one atmosphere, not on a loud, crowded shop floor. Plus, the same set of experienced hands work on your bike every time you see us. Personalized attention, friendly advice, and a first class experience: That’s what Véloved is all about.
Now About That Name…
Andy Schmid? Or Véloved? We’ll start with Andy first. His love affair with cycling goes back as far as he can remember. During any given day of their childhood, Andy and his brother could be found racing single-speed Schwinns around the neighborhood and jumping them off of makeshift ramps, a lá Evil Knievel. Ridden hard and crashed often, those Schwinns took some serious abuse. Out of sheer necessity (and curiousity), Andy learned to fix them. It wasn't long before he found himself craving the "fix." That's right - he was hooked! As he got older, Andy owned and raced- though more often in the rear than the front - much nicer bikes than those single-speed Schwinns, but fixing bikes still remained his favorite part of cycling.
Just a Bit More About Andy
Today, known for his friendly enthusiasm and attention to detail, Andy is one of the most sought after bike mechanics in Central New York. He is a United Bicycle Institute graduate, holding professional and advanced certifications, a USA Cycling licensed race mechanic, and a Shimano Factory certified tech, as well as a Park Tool School instructor and a BikeFit Pro fitting specialist. He apprenticed under a master mechanic and three-time national road race champion at Brooklyn’s busiest bike shop, and later continued to hone his mechanical skills working with a former ProTour team mechanic. Wanting to give cyclists a refreshing alternative to the typical big brand shop, Andy set out on his own – and Véloved was born.
Alright, The Name!
Véloved is pronounced V-LOVE-ED, as in dearly beloved. Vélo means “bike” in French. And as you’ve probably gathered by now, we truly love all things cycling. So our name is a nifty mash up of the words “bike” and “love.”
